“Anomalya II” runs 4th to 18th June

Italian born painter Danilo Quo Vadis has been interested in the underground creative scene since his teens. He paints on any material, depicting characters that ‘are left out of society’. He has instinctively developed his work on walls in abandoned and forgotten places, cinemas, clubs and squats from Krakow, Sarajevo, Lisbon and Berlin, preferring places where he has control over colours, music and space. He is a compulsive painter and has chosen to settle in Dublin,’ a place in which his characters, animals and views seem to find their colours, sustenance and smiles.

‘Anomalya’ is a momentary vision of estranged concepts, vivid sensations and soliloquy painted thoughts. This is atypical in the ‘street art scene’, devoid of icons and pop-up characters. It is a return to classical painting with an underground feeling.

The series of portraits painted on bread boards, are complex, severe and commanding and are the core of the show. The faces, proud of the wall surface, stare out into the show with an arrogance or fear. The images continue beyond the boundary of the board and wander freely over the walls. The paintings are segments of the greater whole; a small part of the bigger picture. Other works show Danilo Quo Vadis’ paint on found objects.

Clyne Gallery is delighted to announce a solo exhibition featuring the work of Irish sculptor David Folan from the 19th to 31st May 2011. The exhibition, entitled Flight Test, includes a series of framed sculptures and installations dealing with ethics in contemporary society by exploring themes such as transience, the commodification of living creatures and complicity.

The focal piece in the exhibition consists of a series of resin cast life size quails suspended from the gallery ceiling. The accompanying installations also feature cast life forms. Clear glass bottles hover above a shelf displaying rat pups and words, which construct a poem by the artist when seen together. Another striking piece comprises dozens of white spoons projecting from the wall of the gallery, each of which holding a coloured cast chick. When experienced together the colours form an intended pattern.

“Society as a whole is complicit in the factory style production of animals and their unnecessary deaths. The animals that I’m using have all been subject to a manufacturing process where they have been bred to be killed and used as food for exotic pets. While the show is not directly about animal rights, the pieces are designed to make the viewer question their own views on the subject” says Folan. The artist also emphasises that he only uses frozen specimens and they are always treated with respect.

David Folan has exhibited in various group shows nationwide in the past couple of years and his work is available in Clyne Gallery. He started his career as a furniture designer and his passion for art led him to expand his skills in the mediums of clay, bronze, plastic and steel as well as video and photography.

Clyne Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition of work entitled Wearing Purple, by artist Garvan Gallagher, as part of this year’s Bealtaine Festival, a unique and groundbreaking Irish festival celebrating creativity in older age.

Artist’s Statement:

“This is a story about growing old. It is a story of a small village in Co. Donegal, in the North West of Ireland and of some of its inhabitants; the people photographed are adults from my childhood.

It is a story of their perfectly normal lives photographed in their normal homes. This project brought me back to the adults I knew as a child, who now happen to be in the social category of ‘senior citizens’. The subjects range from 65 to 98 years of age – the eldest in my hometown and include my secondary school principle, the lady who taught me the accordion, the postman who was simply called ‘John the Post’, my very first teacher and some neighbours that I have only recently come to know. Each subject stares into the camera under an artificial light holding the cable release that runs back to the camera, each in control of their own portrait.”
